Review: Sylvia owori late night shopping

It turns out that every last Friday of the month, shopaholics are permitted to satisfy their frowned upon cravings (by some) by shopping till midnight at Silvia Owori’s Garden City store. This enterprising move has been on the block since late February. However, many of us still didn’t know that there was an opportunity to storm the shopping mall for more than last minute Uchumi needs, late night movies and Boda Boda hangouts.

Despite the fact that the late night shopping phenomenon came as a big hit to the Kampala scene and made a huge splash with its fun filled Friday nights, it must be said that this is a far cry from what July’s Friday held.  Yes, the store was open to the public, yes, there was an overly enthused DJ who was mixing music so loud and finally yes, there was a seemingly endless supply of Redds.

Unfortunately, the glam which surrounded the event in the months past has withered up and died. The catwalk with models was nowhere to be seen and the designer/owner/entrepreneur was a no show either. (Maybe she showed up after I left)

As already mentioned, the music was louder than it was entertaining.

The only other people present by 11pm were a few men sitting outside the shop, merry making and drinking Redds or other alcoholic beverages. It’s doubtful that any of them were there to purchase the latest Silvia Owori creations in the comfort of the late night air.  On the plus side they did heave the occasional heavy glance to any would be shopper which could be considered as a sort of warm welcome to the shopping event.

As for the shopping itself, the store attendant who was quite helpful said that once someone bought an item form the store, they would get a free drink too. There did not seem to be any discounts offered.  If ever the 50 percent discount offer existed, it was not forth coming this time round. The clothes, shoes, accessories and bags are the typical Silvia Owori prices, i.e. high end. But, the variety in selection of what her store offers has maintained its colorful, modern and chic edge.

At the end of the day, all undelivered perks aside, the late night shopping that Silvia Owori offers has been the  sweetener the Friday night scene has needed, if only for the extended shopping hours. After the hustle and bustle of a long day, Silvia Owori fans can wind down the week and month shopping at her store up until midnight with a cold Redds.
