An woman from Tianyu Village, Ofua Sub-county in Adjumani died in labour after repeated calls to her husband to take her to hospital fell on deaf ears.

Joyce Bayoa's uterus ruptured before she could be rushed to the medical facility in Adjumani, the Daily Monitor reported.

When she finally arrived at the hospital the baby was already dead and her blood pressure low due to over bleeding.

The medical superintendent at Adjumani Hospital, Dr Dominic Drametu, said had the 35-year-old been taken to hospital on time her life would have been saved.

"It is alarming to discover that despite the presence of health facilities, only 33 out of 100 pregnant women in Adjumani, usually report for normal deliveries in the health facilities,” Dr Drametu said.

The district secretary for health, Ms Sally Letidru, said that men often escaped at "bottle-neck speed after their wives became pregnant.

About 6,000 women in Uganda are believed to die through childbirth every year.
